What to Expect

A powerful yet gentle treatment designed to rejuvenate your skin and target imperfections.

The procedure uses advanced light-based technology to treat sun damage, redness, and discoloration on the skin's surface, delivering a brighter, more even complexion.

Mild redness or a warm sensation in the treated areas is normal and typically subsides within a few hours. You can easily camouflage any redness with a gentle application of tinted SPF or moisturizer.

Sun spots may become darker within a few days, feeling slightly rough or crusty as they prepare to shed. Within 7–10 days, the darkened spots typically flake off on their own, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin underneath.  It's important not to pick or scratch at these areas to avoid irritation or scarring.

FAQ

What is a Limelight IPL Photofacial?

The Limelight IPL Photofacial is a non-invasive treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to target redness, sun damage, brown spots, and uneven skin tone. It works by delivering light energy to the skin, which is absorbed by pigment and vascular irregularities, promoting a clearer, more radiant complexion.

What skin concerns can it treat?

  • This treatment is ideal for addressing:

  • Sunspots and age spots

  • Redness and rosacea

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Freckles

  • Small blood vessels (telangiectasia)

  • Overall skin rejuvenation

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snap or a mild pinching feeling, similar to the snap of a rubber band. Any discomfort is minimal and brief. A cooling gel is applied to the skin before the treatment to enhance comfort.

What can I expect during the treatment?

During the procedure, a handheld device delivers pulses of light to the targeted areas. The session typically takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Is there any downtime?

The downtime is minimal. You may experience mild redness, swelling, or a slight darkening of brown spots, which typically resolves within a few hours to a couple of days. You can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your specific concerns and skin type. Most patients see significant improvement after 1–3 sessions, spaced about 3–4 weeks apart.

When will I see results?

Results often start to appear within a few days, with continued improvement over the following weeks as your skin heals and regenerates.

How long do results last?

With proper skincare and sun protection, results can last for several months or even longer. Periodic maintenance sessions can help prolong the benefits.

Can all skin types be treated?

The Limelight IPL Photofacial is most effective for lighter skin tones. It is not recommended for darker skin types due to the risk of pigmentation changes. A consultation is essential to determine if this treatment is suitable for your skin.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are generally mild and may include redness, swelling, or temporary darkening of pigment spots. These effects usually resolve on their own within a few days.

Can I combine this treatment with other procedures?

Yes, the Limelight IPL Photofacial can be combined with other treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, or laser resurfacing for enhanced results, however these treatments must be spaced two weeks apart.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Avoid Sun Exposure

Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before your treatment.  Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily to protect your skin.

Discontinue Photosensitizing Products

Stop using products containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), and exfoliating agents at least 5–7 days before your treatment.  Avoid photosensitizing medications or supplements (e.g., antibiotics or St. John’s Wort) unless approved by your provider.

Avoid Certain Skincare Treatments

Do not undergo chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or any other skin resurfacing treatments for at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment.

Remove Self-Tanner

Avoid using self-tanning products for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Ensure any residual self-tanner is completely removed from your skin.

Avoid Irritants

Do not use harsh scrubs, waxing, or hair removal creams on the treatment area for 1 week before the procedure.

Medication and Health Considerations

Inform your provider of any medications you are taking, including blood thinners or medications that increase photosensitivity.  Let your provider know if you have a history of cold sores. An antiviral medication may be prescribed as a preventive measure.  Do not take aspirin, NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), or other blood-thinning medications unless advised by your physician.

Clean Skin on the Day of Treatment

Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Avoid applying lotion, perfume, or deodorant to the treatment area.

Plan Around Special Events

Schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks before any special event to allow for possible redness, swelling, or other mild side effects.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking

Refrain from alcohol consumption and smoking for 24–48 hours before your appointment to enhance healing and minimize side effects.

Hydrate Your Skin

- Keep your skin well-hydrated in the days leading up to the treatment to optimize results.

Inform your provider of any recent illness, rashes, or infections in the treatment area.  â€‹Limelight IPL is not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions. Be sure to discuss your medical history during the consultation.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

After your Limelight IPL Photofacial, it's essential to care for your skin to optimize results and ensure a smooth recovery. Expect some redness and a warm sensation in the treated areas, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours, though pigmentation spots may darken temporarily before flaking off over the next few days. Gently cleanse your skin and avoid using harsh or exfoliating products for at least a week. Protect your skin by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and avoiding direct sun exposure for several days after treatment.

Refrain from vigorous exercise, hot showers, saunas, or hot tubs immediately following the procedure, as heat can exacerbate redness or swelling. You may apply a cool compress to soothe the skin if needed. Avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of irritation.

Stay hydrated and keep your skin moisturized to support the healing process. If your provider prescribed or recommended any topical products, follow their instructions carefully. It's normal to notice a temporary darkening of pigmentation spots as they heal, but this is a sign the treatment is working.

For optimal results, follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your provider at Muse Aesthetics and schedule any recommended follow-up treatments. If you experience any unusual side effects or have concerns, contact your provider immediately.
